St. Albert – Michael Cooper, MP for St. Albert-Edmonton has been appointed to the Special
Joint Committee on Physician-Assisted Dying. The Special Joint Committee was established to
make recommendations to the government on the framework of a federal response to
physician-assisted dying in light of the Carter v. Canada decision. Cooper is one of three
Conservative MPs who will serve on the Special Joint Committee.
“I look forward to serving on the Special Joint Committee,” said Cooper. Cooper continued:
“This is a very sensitive issue. There are a diverse range of opinions from people of good faith.
It is important that the Committee proceed cautiously, with sensitivity to the many deep legal,
moral and ethical issues that underlie the matter and consult widely.”
Cooper concluded: “I am hopeful that the Special Joint Committee can put forward a
reasonable recommendation on a framework that addresses the Carter decision and protects
vulnerable persons.”
