OTTAWA, December 10, 2021 – Michael Cooper, Conservative Member of Parliament for St. Albert – Edmonton, asked the government to stand with Taiwan during question period yesterday.
The People’s Republic of China has intensified its efforts to isolate Taiwan diplomatically and intimidate Taiwan through economic coercion, military provocations, and grey-zone warfare strategies. These actions are a threat to the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged Chinese leaders to think very carefully before triggering a crisis that would have “terrible consequences”.
Canada should join the US and other allies to urge China to cease its efforts to change the decades-long status quo of the Taiwan Strait unilaterally and militarily. Any dispute across the Taiwan Strait should be resolved through peaceful dialogue.
The Canadian government has yet to add its voice to those of our allies who are calling on China to end their campaign of aggression and military pressure against Taiwan.
MP Cooper issued the following statement:
“Taiwan, a democratic ally of Canada, is facing provocative military pressure from Communist China, which is increasingly threatening Taiwan’s sovereignty. Our allies have called on China to stop this campaign of aggression. It’s time Canada added its voice.”
